Sodium bicarbonate 8.4% is used to treat metabolic acidosis, which can be caused by severe renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration, cardiac arrest, and severe primary lactic acidosis. It is also used to treat severe diarrhea, often accompanied by a significant loss of bicarbonate. In animals, sodium bicarbonate 8.4% can be used to treat metabolic acidosis in cattle, horses, sheep, swine, and dogs depending on the underlying causes.
