Mastitis is a costly disease in cattle, affecting milk yields and animal welfare, often leading to early culling. The main financial impact comes from decreased milk production during antibiotic treatment, along with the loss of contaminated milk.

FERA Diagnostics Accumast Mastitis Detection Plates provide a quick and accurate method for identifying mastitis-causing pathogens. These easy-to-use culture plates detect various bacteria, including E. coli and Staph aureus, using selective media that allows for color-based classification. Results are available in just 16 hours, enabling farmers to identify and treat only the affected animals. By using Accumast, farmers can reduce antibiotic use and improve cow health and milk quality. Each plate can accommodate two samples, cutting costs in half.

Refrigeration is required.

Instructions

  1. Collect the milk from affected quarter, aseptically, into a labeled sterile vial and keep refrigerated until culture
  2. In a clean environment, using a sterile cotton-tipped swab, streak the sample onto surface of one section of the Accumast tri plate. Use a side-to-side motion and cover the entire surface of the bacterial media. Repeat process with the remaining two sections of the media
  3. Replace the lid and incubate, lid side down, for 16 hours at 37 °C (98.6 °F)
  4. Between 16 and 24 hours, interpret each section of the plate based on the guide images
